I’ll be honest. I was very judgmental of the show at first. I thought it was stupid and only idiots watched what I thought was a gross excuse for modern animation. However, during one summer I decided to change my life around. I’d had a list of shows that I didn’t bother watching because I had judged them too hard or because I wasn’t allowed to due to my extremely religious mother’s discomfort with them. I took that list and went and watched every show on it, Adventure Time being one of them, and I finished them all in the span of three years. It was life changing. Adventure Time is one of the greatest things to have ever existed on this earth and I praise Pendleton Ward for his amazing work. Not only did it have great messages, unique and bold (though minimal) animation, real authentic emotional characters, and catchy songs that never leave your head, but this show had meaning...any emotion displayed on the screen, I felt. The way the creators were able to so effortlessly portray reality through animation was admirable and impressive to say the least. This show has and always shall have a special place in my heart.

I’m no professional critic but I am a customer and lover of comics and all books, really. Before I read Pumpkinheads, I held the book in my hand and analyzed its cover. The first thing I noticed was the minimal detail in the leaves, the characters, the clothing, all of it. This was very fascinating to me since I am an artist myself. I knew not what the book contained but I do know that what caught my eye about the book was the fact that there was a black girl on the cover. We hardly get to see that in the YA section because the majority of the books only reach out to an audience that I don’t have much in common with racially. The other thing to have caught my eye was not only the fact that this black girl was with a boy, but that she was with a white boy. An interracial couple that has a black girl and a white boy is something that is very underrated in the books of the world. I would also love to mention how the girl (Deja) is bisexual! I was very glad to see all the inclusiveness throughout this comic and to be able to enjoy its story and all the scenery. Fall is my favorite season so that also played a part in getting me to pick up the book. All I can say is that I’m glad I did pick it up and I’ll definitely be reading more from both the author and illustrator.
