I did not find the book confusing at all and thought it clever that Birdie's era was clear, as at the start of her story an old fashioned clock appeared at different consecutive hours, so quite clear which time period. I agree a lot of characters per period of time but it is necessary to slowly reveal the plot. However, I found it overly descriptive and a tad boring. Cheese on toast for me.

The film was dire but the series on Netflix is a joy to behold with great acting and a fast witty intelligent script I was unaware of the ending which I didn't see coming and knocked me for six! I loved the music and being 5 years older than Emma and Dexter in 1988 it reminded me of so many good tunes. I am a sixty something oldie that over 14 episodes felt 20. I Loved it and 15th July used to be my Mums birthday which endeared it even more to me
