At it's onset I realized Helen was talking about her beloved dog. Getting into the movie itself I felt the father was abusing the son, the son never had any type of connection with the father. The minister was a sad example of a shepherd on so many levels. Helen killed her son, doing so hid the fact that he was a child abuser as well as a murderer.
