Maybe I am conflating high hopes with high expectations. This movie was bad. All of the cameos were fun, but you could definitely tell who was an actor and who wasnโt. This movie suffered from not knowing its target audience. The comedy was goofy, did not toe the line of politically incorrect or offensive, it didnโt even come a mile near the line. Very few swear words were used and how goofy the comedy was I feel like they were targeting little kids not the audience that watched the original 28 years ago. Again seeing Eminem, post Malone, Travis Kelsey etcโฆ is interesting but they canโt act, and I would much rather trade their roles as co stars with say a Rob Schneider who was only in the film for about 5 seconds and Rob is both funny and can act unlike 50-75% of the celebrity cameos that were in the film. John Daly who embodies happy Gilmore was regulated to a drunk uncle who does nothing and inputs nothing to the story, had much higher hopes for him. Again the cameos were done for cameoโs sake, and it did nothing but hurt the film. It felt like who was invited to the cool kids party in high school. The plot was horrible and was filled with holes. At the end of the movie all I could think about was again the target audience. It is not for kids, they donโt know who Happy Gilmore is. Itโs not for adults who grew up with the classic hit movie, the comedy is way too goofy, censored, and restricted. So who is it for? Itโs for every modern Hollywood comedy. The numb, dumb, high on pot, half drooling losers who laugh at silly goofy things. I would say this film acts like a 2000โs stoner comedy but that is an insult to 2000โs stoner comedy classics. Just super weird and goofy and I expected and hoped for so much more.
