10 girls and guys have to survive as long as they can, with limited gear. WInner gets 500k, bragging rights, and if they play it right, a bunch of sponsors and deals and subscribers for their Youtube channels. In other words, the winner is set for life. You can tell it's got to be 90% real with the way you see the weight loss. I'm sure there's specific things encouraged to the participants that we aren't aware of, but that's just speculation.
What you'll find with Alone is a lot of knowledge on survival tactics. No matter how many of these survival TV shows and movies, or books you may have consumed, I guarantee you, that you'll learn something new. A lot of the cast live in wild, remote places like Red Devil, Alaska and some of the survival tactics they use are ones they developed surviving in those specific regions. For instance, a type of food cache you've never seen that was developed out of necessity.
You'll notice how the human mind deals with being Alone. A lot of them will crack on camera and become totally vulnerable, almost like a baby. You may even get emotional with them, it's definitely an emotional roller-coaster for them, and if you're empathic, then it will be for you too, definitely..trust me...I know.
The producers seem to compile the clips into a story they want to tell. There's usually a theme you'll notice. A lot of times, you won't see them harvest food, if it's plentiful, but you'll definitely see them struggle to get food when it gets later in the season. Like I said, the producers have an agenda and they dramatize A LOT of the show, which can be annoying at times. But, if you're a normal person and don't over think things like me, you won't even notice it and you'll be entertained. There is literally, never a dull moment, unless the producers had a little story they wanted to tell about how the human mind deals with the boredom and dullness of surviving alone. I could go on, but I don't want to spoil it. Give it a shot, but know this, it gets better as the seasons progress, so don't just watch 1 episode or even 1 whole season and think you've seen it all. Watch it all! Ah, and beware, season 4 (I believe) is really different and I didn't like it. It's pairs of 2 people (families) surviving together, It's really dumb. I don't know why they would do that on a show called "Alone". I think they learned with the low ratings it got because they haven't done it again.
