This show surprised me.
I was expecting a show like Rick and Morty with overly crude humour with a sci-fi plot. In reality, Final Space is less of a comedy and more of a gut-wrenching adventure, and the comedy is derived not from shock factor crude humour, but the dynamics between the wildly different characters. This show really isn’t afraid of throwing punches. Truly horrifying and awful things happen to the main characters, unlike any other show I’ve seen that’s afraid to hurt or kill its characters because plot. The show is distinctly aware of the character’s limits. They are all only human - or cat people, or robots. They are not all powerful beings.
While still paying homage to classic sci-fi movies (mostly Star Wars), Final Space manages to feel unique and is a valuable new addition to the sci-fi genre. I hope to see more of Gary and the crew in future seasons.
