Only reason why people gave bad reviews is because alien origin wasn't explained when they came from space, nothing else matters. Also that the cat is the star of the film. He is part of the film as its not possible for the audience to invest emotion in a character that's going to die anyways.
I really enjoyed the film and love the franchise and the sole focus on surviving with a very simple story as we already know the outcome from the first two films.
