This show gave me high expectations for how great it could be and all the actors are really talented (even the children do awesome) but then each episode leaves way too much unanswered and not in a good way.
I’m all for horror and mysteries but this is just plain confusing. It’s like the writers forget to carry on some HUGE open ended scenes to the next episode. Or it’s like they just forgot. Look, I’m all for leaving things to my imagination, but there are just too many holes that the writers expect me to fill in for them. It’s giving off self check out vibes, ya know? You like the idea of it & has potential to be awesome, but you’re not getting paid and you’re still expected to do all the work as good as someone who’s trained specifically for that job.
SPOILER ALERT BELOW. These are examples from season 1.
The demon, George, that comes to Kristen in her sleep. Super scary at first but then she quickly proves the demon isn’t real (all within the first episode). But then George keeps reappearing as if they didn’t just explain he’s all in her head. Like what?? How can you expect me to be scared for her if I know he’s fake and he can’t hurt her?
Then the episode with the haunted VR game and the psychotic 9 yr old boy. What was that all about? Creepy at first and had potential. You think both scenes could be related. But nope, totally separate situations and neither made sense. Girls get a creepy VR game, they play it, the game says creepy stuff, Mom takes it away, and it stops & everyone moves on (so why even make it a part of the show?). Then they randomly jump back to the boy whom they’ve killed off before providing any type of solution or explanation to anything… like what?
How about the little girl “Brenda” that just shows up on Halloween night. Who was she? why didn’t they show her face? why did she decide to mess with Kristen’s daughters? “Brenda” didn’t even hurt anyone, you don’t hear the rest of her story, you don’t know who her mean parents are, & she just leaves laughing as if I’m supposed to be scared…? No one even got buried like the “possessed” woman warned her about.
I think they should take notes from the first season of American horror story. Not everything is revealed immediately, you question what’s real & what isn’t (keeps you on edge), they don’t answer every single thing BUT it explains just enough for your imagination to go wild. It doesn’t have to be as scary/graphic, but the storyline makes way more sense bc they explain why certain things happen.
