Raya and The Last Dragon (2021) was a mediocre movie at best. I expected much more from Disney–compared to other movies Disney has put out, Raya falls into predictable archetypes. First off, the jokes made little sense. For example, Sisu, a dragon, jokes about needing a nightlight. How does a dragon, let alone a dragon in an age without technology, know what a nightlight is? The baby’s actions were far too intelligent and unbelievable for a baby. The story elements were not cohesive, and character development was rushed. I can’t seem to come up with personality traits for the main three characters. Their trauma seems to act as their personalities, making you not care about them. Southeast Asian dragons are grand and beautiful, but Sisu’s design is obnoxiously designed to sell toys. The art department was likely limited, and it is sad to see a waste of talent and source material. Despite all these flaws, the artistry that went into Raya’s visuals is a trademark of Disney’s innovative and appealing approach to their movies. The fighting scenes and worlds were magnificently designed. Overall, the best part of this movie is Tuk-tuk.
Spoiler...... below.......
When you look at all the stone turned statues in the movie , they were oriented in a specific pose when it happened, however in the later part of the movie I did not see this applied to some of the main characters - and they stayed in their chosen last positions
Also not a critique but somehow the other girl the dragon changed to reminded me of the teenage daughter in the “croods” movie - this could just be my observation
