As a Stones fan I think I can pinpoint the exact moment there was a shift. 1973, Goats Head Soup. It was obviously a bunch of leftovers from their greatest record Exile on Main St. but something changed big time.
Everyone sounds lazy and uninterested except for Mick. This was the beginning of a new era. Mick went from shouting, to singing like Thurston Howell on cocaine. A singing style he has never looked back from. Just listen to “Angie”. Sounds like “I Ain’t Jed”.
One needs to look no further than the album cover. MICK alone. Charlie is the star of the album to my ears. It has a bleak NYC day drinking, heroin-chic hooker vibe that I love. My favorite track is easily the New Orleans influenced swagger heavy “Hide Your Love”.
After this album it was all glitter. The follow up album is unlistenable. The danger was long gone. Yet somehow I crave it all.
