I would give this series a 0 star review if possible. Firstly, it is extremely danguerous and insensitive to rewrite history to fit the narrative of a certain group. Especially when history is right there.
Firstly, they claim that Cleopatra was black, which is not only extremely inaccurate, but also an uneducated take. Cleopatra was not from Egypt or Africa at all, she was European Greek.
Secondly, they claim that Egyptians were black and that the current Egyptians are Arab invaders who colonized the original Egyptian population. This is also extremely harmful and danguerous, because the Ancient Egyptians and the current Egyptians are the exact same people. They were never Black, they never had West African looks. Some were darker than others, some were mixed with other ethnicities, however, they were never West African or "Black".
The Arabs spread Islam to the levant and North Africa and with that, the Arabic language spread. The original populations were never wiped out or replaced, they simply began practicing different religions and began speaking a different language.
The myth that the Jews, or that the Black Africans built the pyramids is also inaccurate. The people who built the pyramids were the Egyptians, who are the same people who currently live in Egypt!
The issue people have with this is not that an African actress is playing the role of Cleopatra. The issue is rewriting history, making a false documantry with inaccurate and biased claims. It is extremely problematic.
The Africans have thousands of years of history and rich cultures with many empires and dynasties of their own. But some of them want to claim all of the world's history to themselves, which causes confusion among people.
An even more problematic thing is that Netflix allowed this documentary, and because many find Netflix to be an accurate source for documantaries and other historical films they will trust the contents. This is not a case of "The Little Mermaid", which is an entairly fictional character -- this is supposed to be historically educational and accurate.
If they wanted to make a historically accurate film that wasnt based on theories and opinions, they would hire either a greek or arab actress to play the role of Cleopatra. Then they would hire egyptians to play the parts of the egyptians in Egypt.
Cleopatra was not Black, the Egyptians were not Black, Egyptians and Greeks have their own rich culture and history and it is insensitive and straight up rude to steal their identity and history to fit your own narrative and biases. Instead of trying to steal others' history, try finding your own. Do a DNA-Test, find out your origin and educate yourself about your rich culture. Africa as a whole has so much history. No need to claim North Africas history just because they aren't black. Be proud of your own history. This documantary sucks and need to be taken down.
