THIS IS NOT A KIDS FILM
This is a dark twist on the classic story and when I say “twist” I mean it’s twisted so much it may be unrecognizable to some people. But it is a beautiful movie about grief, death, and love and It is also very depressing. This movie wasn’t what I expected at all but I’m very glad it wasn’t. I thought this was going to be another tired remake but instead it felt like a whole new story.
I found the music to be quite enjoyable and I have been listening to Ciao Papa for days now. My Son was somber and realistic and Everything is New To Me although a bit random lifted up the mood a bit and felt like a child discovering a new world.
What I love about this movie is that you can see the characters change throughout the film and start to act differently to situations later on in the movie. We get real character development here! There are also little parallels in the film such as when Carlos had new shoes vs when Pinocchio got new feet. It’s incredibly detailed and the animation is spectacular although I’m bias to stop motion.
The nazi stuff was weird and a bit forced at times but I felt it was incorporated well into the film where I could accept it as a reality. The church scenes were handled wonderfully too. At first I thought this was going to trash on religion but it didn’t and it made sense within the story.
I watched this movie twice in two days and I’m convinced that the one star reviews are left from people who thought this was a remake of Disney’s version and they didn’t finish it. If you make it to the end and really pay attention, you may end up loving it for its weirdness.
