Others have beautifully summarized the plot and protagonist. I loved this book at first. But, in the end it was too much for me. A shred of hope would have satisfied me. A woman with a young child and a daughter heading for a dinghy in the ocean with one lifejacket between them did not leave me optimistic. We know the success rates of migrants in boats in the ocean.
