*SPOILERS*
Spider-Man PS4 is a 2018 single player story mode game exclusive to the PlayStation 4 console. It follows the life of a young adult Peter Parker who has been Spider-Man for several years prior to the beginning of the game. It is set in Parker’s hometown of New York City and features real world structures such as the Empire State building as well as fictional buildings like the Avengers Tower.
The game starts off by giving you limited abilities such as a simple web shot or punch attack however as the game progresses you are unable to unlock some really effective and useful skill sets.
The game also pulls in fans from older generations by adding subtle references to movie depictions of Spider-Man. For example, there is a scene where he attempts to stop a moving train by using himself as a human blockade whilst holding on to his webs. This is symbolic of the time where Tobey Maguire’s depiction of Spider-Man did the same thing in the 2004 movie Spider-Man 2.
Furthermore, the game developers cleverly make the player emotionally invested in the game by putting the player and Peter through tough decisions and moments throughout the game. These include Peter having to let his Aunt pass away in order to have a vaccine that could cure the whole city, fighting his mentor and putting him in high security prison as well as having flashbacks of the murder of his Uncle Ben.
A cool feature of the game is the suit customization area where there is an abundance of suits you can wear, some of which are detail-accurate to the films but also some which were created just for the game. Each suit has different abilities which help the game feel new every time you play it.
Overall, Spider-Man PS4 is one of the best story mode games I have ever played due to its clever storytelling, realistic and fun game play, references to movies as well as the flexible and cool customization center.
