POTENTIAL VERY MINOR SPOILER AHEAD:
There are pros and cons to any show. I’ll go with cons first to get it out of the way because I enjoy the show overall.
IMHO, it lacks excitement at times and can be a bit repetitive (meet friend request, friend request resists help, team brainstorms, friend request accepts help). However, it’s still early enough in the series to not be boring as long as we see some more curveballs soon-ish. Also, some of the storyline for the main romantic relationship as of the date of this post seems a bit forced and cliché with it’s issues. But hey... most TV relationships are and it’s a side story.
Now to the pros...
With the cons being said, I am thoroughly enjoying the “feel-good” aspect of this show! It’s a refreshing change of pace for the drama to come from helping people as opposed to preventing harm to people or something similar. I also love the main 3 characters - something about them was cast perfectly, if not slightly stereotypical (computer genius of Indian decent - not a SJW just pointing it out lol). I am all for diversity in leading roles where it makes sense though and is not done simply for the sake of diversity; the latter does not appear to be the case here.
Last part, but most important in my mind (kinda long and preachy - sorry - TLDR: show does a good job of portraying the growing gap in religious gen x/baby boomers and the non-religious younger/millennial generations. Hope they keep it up and find common ground).
Additionally, the very real issue of religion between the younger/millennial generation and older baby boomer/gen x crowd is portrayed with elegance, although it is a fairly subdued topic in the grand scheme of things so far.
I am personally not a religious man but fully believe in the majority of values that most religions teach. I am hoping this issue will come out more prominently at times (without becoming preachy - hard to do as it can be a fine line) and help to illustrate where we can find common ground. I hope they are able to effectively show that many atheists believe that people should generally behave as religions would dictate (with modern changes as appropriate), regardless of potential for an afterlife and the associated fear of a “hell” that comes with it.
Basically, I want the show to illustrate a philosophy I TRY (key word there) to live by and that is: “Don’t be a dick. Be nice to people without letting them take advantage. Help when you can. Ask for help when you need. And in general, always try to do the right thing, even when it’s not the easy thing.” I think that is where we can find common ground which is important for strained relationships (once you see the show you’ll know who I’m talking about).
I would hope any potential God out there would agree with that... in more eloquent language of course.
