It is a rollercoaster. I found myself thinking of my own children, in their young 20s and myself and their father as their imperfect parents. I watched (Timothee Chalamet as) Nic's beautiful potential disappear and reappear several times. I pulled my knees up and looked away, scrunching up my eyes tightly. I cried during the bathroom scene. It was very, very sad but ultimately redeeming. Well worth seeing. I don't agree about the gloss, or am bothered about the "white privilege" that other reviewers have criticised. For me it came across as an authentic story of a father and son's fight with addiction.
