(PS4 Version) I'm kind of disappointed how the game turned out. I was going to give it 4☆. But - there's a still too much, that hasn't grown on me after finishing the game.
I was a yakuza fan. Especially before it was relaunched as 'Like a Dragon' - pretty annoying long title.
However, I was thrilled for the Ishin remake.
Here's my biggest issue with that:
Yakuza 0 and Kiwami had some English translation issues, some misspelled words.
Nothing major. I liked that the game only had English subtitles. It could capture the Japanese language quite good and literally.
However, I was forced to play Ishin with German subtitles, as I'm located in Germany. There's no option to change the language of the subtitles. I wouldn't complain if the German translation would be any good. It's not. It doesn't make sense most of the time. The numbers of misspellings and grammatical errors is increasing only towards the end. Totally feels like the translation team got bored halfway through. Don't do this stuff, Ryu ga gotoku studios!
I liked the story - I liked playing Saito Hajime (Kiryu), as he was a better written character than Kiryu through 6 games. And as I just recently got spoiled for Yakuza 8, and how they decided to end a longstanding character just made me angry. I stopped after Yakuza 6. That's where the series ends for me. I might give this pirate spin-off a try if it uses Majima as the main character.
I thought the Minigames were too repetitive. Either gambling or some kind of rhythm game. I didnt like the friendship system. As there was very little reward for completing them.
The most fun I had with farming and cooking. As it was something I've never done before in the series and well exceuted. However, that was quite underused. I had no idea what to do with all the vegetables in my inventory. And it wasn't possible to sell them in bulks.
The ticket system and lottery is boring and has no purpose.
The skill trees are stupid - the fighting styles are stupid. In the end you stick with one or two of them. I've never used the combat style, as it was not effective at all against enemies with swords and guns.
The lack of heat actions and conditions to use them is ridiculous.
At some point you start running away from street fights - you can get rid off them by looking at a random urn in the middle of the street. As there's no distraction or anything that could be used. Not even a customisation where any other kimono than the blue one just lessens these encounters.
In a nutshell: if I want to play a jrpg I play Persona. If I want a whacky story I play Final Fantasy. If I want a fun and over the top brawler I play yakuza.
So, now I'm disappointed.
