It's a fairly large departure from the original source material of the Vertigo comics, but it stands on its own two legs, if you can get past the divergence.
Tom Ellis is pretty near a perfect casting, and has legitimately made the show's version of the main character relatable. In many ways, the show has been like watching a teenager grow up, moving from a self-centered persona to one who is genuinely aware of others and how he affects them, and how they affect him in return.
The rest of the cast has all had their own personal journeys, and they all find a way to make the characters real, with a mix of strengths and flaws, endearing qualities and annoying ones, and make for relatable and believable relationships and interactions with the other characters.
I'm looking forward to starting season 5.2 tonight, then watching season 6 when it's finally released. I'm hoping but not expecting that a couple characters from the current cast will get a spinoff show.
Maze and Trixie could have a fantastic arc, as the demon bounty hunter who's also then guardian of the teenage daughter of a miracle.
