This is one of those movies that has been on my list for a long time, but I was just waiting for the right moment to watch it. Unfortunately I ended up being rather disappointed and after many years of build up, just like the plot of the film, there was no final gratification. I haven’t read the book, so I can’t speak to how it translated, however I just feel like something was off about the whole thing. Jude Law carried the bulk of the the film **spoiler coming** so it was unfortunate when he was killed off in that sad little boat. I understand what they were trying to capture in Matt Damon’s character, I just feel like aside from one scene where he expresses his torment to Peter, we didn’t really get to see much depth. Tom Ripley is the unlikely villain in this film, but there are very few opportunities for the audience to connect with him on this journey. I realise not many people share my view, I guess I was really hoping to like this more than I did!! The things I did enjoy were obviously the locations, and it’s no surprise as to why this is frequently on the list of ‘films to inspire a trip to Italy.’ I also really enjoyed Phillip Seymour Hoffman and Cate Blanchett, who in my opinion have never given a bad performance. All and all, it wasn’t terrible, it also wasn’t particularly memorable for me.
