Overall I liked elements of the show a lot. Jenna Ortega is very committed at least to the role. She had a few good lines and looked the part. But capturing Wednesday from the movies we grew up with it was an extremely tall order.
Xavier was just an odd character. Not enjoyable in any aspect. Rowan was interesting. Made me think of the love interest of Wednesday in the second movie.
Enid was also very committed to her role. But felt like this was her very first acting job ever and she was determined to succeed. Very enthusiastic if not very believable.
I think it was the actor’s commitment to their roles I enjoyed. They went for it. The ambiance was nice, like a more subdued Burton film. Dark but not over the top. Gwendolyn is probably my favorite in the series. Next to Tyler and then Jenna. Pugsley was actually quite good too, definitely a different approach that was pretty refreshing.
My biggest complaints were morticia and Gomez. Did the casting directors lose a bet? In What universe would you choose Zeta (who is a good actress for Certain roles..) for such a poised, elegant, reserved, enigmatic, and enchanting role as Morticia??? And Luis Guzman? No. Just no. I can’t begin to elaborate on what an abominable casting choice that was. It just ruined the charm of the family.
Thankfully the show is about Wednesday and not the Addams. Jenna does an admirable job carrying the show. Gwendolyn was a boss as usual who has far too much grace and command for any role she plays. Tyler, Eugene, and I guess Thing (a hand?) are all great too.
But please. For the love of all that’s good in the world Netflix. STOP MAKING EVERYTHING BE ABOUT GORE AND VIOLENCE. jeez.
