Overall good plot. Polanski would have slowly revealed a real evil patriarch of the Russian mob. As a crime thriller it seems to try to find a place between portraying reality and building up the tension.

There are two possible plots. 1) Chow's character is real. Then his character is not convincing as a gang leader. 2) Chow is Lee's invention. Lee is the real leader. Then there is no clue about Lee restarting his father's gang. How did Lee transform into a gunfighter overnight? Not to mention 5 or so gang members wiping out 89 soldiers is ludicrous.
