I always love a good Scottish romance, but this movie was painful to watch.
Brooke Shields was horribly miscast in the lead role. She appeared clumsy and Amazonian next to Cary Elwes, and her darkly garish makeup did not help. Shields's lack of any discernible acting talent ruined any chance this film had of success. There was zero chemistry between the two romantic leads. In fact, Shields's character, Sophie, seemed happier when she was with the dog, Hamish, than with the lord of the castle. Clearly she got the job because she produced the show.
And why is Drew Barrymore's talk show being plugged? It served no purpose in the movie and made for an awkward, disjointed end.
Great rom coms are worth their weight in gold. This is NOT one of them. There is no Christmas magic in this trite, predictable mess.
