i really tried to like the book and did enjoy it in the first half. the reason why i was hooked on to the main characters and their messy “relationship” was because i had hopes that maybe they will get somewhere. spoiler alert: they did not.
maybe, i am just a cruel, old fashioned perfectionist who believes people should either be into each other or they should stop seeing each other and i do admit it is unfair to project that idea onto fictional characters. i know people can be and are allowed to be messy but i read fiction to connect with characters, no matter how flawed they are. with this book, i just couldn’t connect with them.
Marianne and Connell seem to be running around in circles with their “love” which seems to be getting them nowhere and it is frustrating to me even as i try to appreciate the rawness of the whole story. over all, i do not recommend this book. it’s quite overhyped and underwhelming, especially the ending.
