Bohemian Rhapsody had been a movie I had been awaiting all summer due to my love and fascination with Queen and Freddie Mercury’s life. However, seeing the critics’ reviews since the release of the movie had toned down my excitement and caused me to fear that this would be a shallow biography and not a celebration of his life and music. And guess what? Upon seeing it, I came to the conclusion that it wasn’t what the critics were claiming that it was. Of course, they changed quite a few details so that they could fit more into the main story, (like the meeting with Jim Hutton), and more emotional moments, but the rest of the film depicts the flamboyancy and drama of his life wonderfully. In addition to the ton of emotional scenes, there is gorgeous cinematography, exciting music, great performances, and humor to balance out the drama. My only complaint of the film, (along with the changed details), are the poor way that they portrayed Freddie’s solo album, (which, just like the rest of his music, is brilliant). Still, even if you are just a casual fan of Queen, there is plenty to love about this film.
