I can’t decide if it’s trying to be funny or clever or both or something else. Really wanted to like this.

Very long and very sad. Pitt is gorgeous, as is the cinematography, but even he isn't enough to make this movie enjoyable to watch. You've got a mother's abandonment, deaths, murder, suicide, a stroke (was that necessary?), unrequited love, despair and sadness. I found it very depressing, but maybe because I've been cooped up in my house for two months.

Parts were interesting and entertaining, but visuals got repetitive and non sensical. Pugh was great in the part and was the best part of the movie. It just didn't seem to work.

Gorgeous movie. Very stylish in black and white with little music. The dialogue sounded like what upper class people in the 1920's would say. The story was beautiful at times, but mostly tragic. Both women were "passing" but one only used it when it suited her and looked down on the other who was intentionally passing full time. Even her racist husband didn't know. But she was miserable. She had the perks being white at the time afforded, but knew she was living a lie and despised her husband. The other lived in Harlem surrounded by other black people but even though they were wealthy, they would always be in danger from white people as her husband often reminded her. The ending isn't clear and I think that's intentional. I think she jumped and wanted her husband to witness it. I hope it wins the Oscar.

One of my favorite movies. A young girl, taking advantage by an older man and parents who are complicit without realizing it.

I love JLD, but all of the best parts of this movie are shown in the trailer. I didn't like the character she played- I found her immature and self involved and in the end, exhausting. Such a bummer, as I loved her in Enough Said- which was a very enjoyable, touching movie.
