Stunning and visceral first hand account of Eastern Front. Looking back at history it’s easy to conclude that all Germans invading Russia were ideologically driven fanatical Nazi monsters. I’ve seen some reviews of this book that have been critical because the author did not show enough contrition or self reflection of why they fought. His account shows exactly how it was for most of the forces doing the fighting - they were teenagers plucked from ordinary life and sent to fight with little say in the matter. Once they got there, the only reason they battled so hard was stay alive and look after their comrades. It makes you realise how utterly futile the Eastern front was. I’ve read a lot of WW2 accounts but this one will stay with me.
