This movie only got a score of 35 on rotten tomatoes. I’m usually onboard with their ratings but I enjoyed this film. The scenery was as beautiful as the actors and I thought they did a fairly convincing job. The plot centered on the harsh, somewhat unrealistic life, of an abandoned child in an off-the-grid cabin in the wild marshlands of South Carolina. Her family was destroyed and scattered to the winds by the violent behavior of her abusive father. Although the theme of the travails of a childhood spent in an abusive and isolated home may be trite and formulaic it happens every day across the world and was grippingly portrayed in this film. The rest of the movie was somewhat predictable well-acted, visually appealing, and emotionally satisfying but I’m a hopeless romantic so sue me. I enjoyed watching it and especially enjoyed the understated elegance and beauty of the lead character, Kyla Clark, played by Daisy Edgar-Jones.
