NON SPOLIER:
Vikram is technically brilliant, a satisfactory movie with big star cast, all of them get very good screen space.
It has well choregraphed fight sequences, great cinematography.
But I do not recommend watching with kids as there is too much violence and blood.
The background score is good and has better songs than most of Anirudh's recent films.
Lokesh Kanagaraj has made a new attempt to create his own "universe" with stories and characters linked from Kaithi and obviously, this movie is part 2 of Vikram movie, so has Kamal's character in the movie as a spin off here.
I sincerely appreciate the efforts behind this!!!
You will have guaranteed entertainment. Worth a watch in theatre.
WARNING: SPOILERS
This movie is good but is overhyped, seriously due to social media!
I love all these actors for their performances, but the movie experience feels incomplete because:
1. Less emotional, predictable at times: Fahad's gf and baby vikram are meant to evoke emotional response from viewers, ie. we are supposed to feel sad for them. But does that happen? I could easily predict that Fahad's gf will be killed(this character comes in the film just to get killed), and something will happen to the baby in pre climax...I did not feel sorry for them at all. The emotional connect, overall, is missing in most places.
Even interval block was good, but predictable: even a kid could tell that the person behind the mask is Kamal and he was alive.
2. Not suitable for all: There is too much of unnecessary violence on screen. Just because it is an action movie, not "every" alternate scene needs to have a fight, and killing people everywhere!!!
I am not a very sensitive person, but I feel there should be enough reason for violence and action, which is not seen sometimes in this movie.
3. Some logic flaws: Most people ignored this, owing to the technical brilliance and good performances. Kamal is playing a secret agent(and his team), he must be extremely intelligent. Instead of a direct fight, using knives and other weapons, there must be better ways to kill the drug dealers, right?
At least, that is what an intelligent agent must do.
4. Long run time: This movie could have been cut by at least 30 minutes and still managed to stay crisp and impactful, by avoiding unnecessary gore and violence.
5. Suriya's cameo as Rolex: This is being praised as a highlight in the movie, but because it is being hyped too much and was leaked beforehand, I did not applaud the cameo as much as I thought I would. Honestly, even if Lokesh wanted to show Rolex as evil, the head cutting scene was not necessary at all.
6. Too many characters: Personally, I found it too confusing to remember the names of characters in the first 30 minutes of the movie: VJS' big family, him having 3 wives: felt unnecessary to the story.
7. Not a power packed villain: Even though VJS did his job perfectly, there is a mistake in writing his character. VJS did not feel much terrifying and impactful, he is underplayed here, because they kept saying that he is just a "tool". This may have been done to create a build up for Suriya: to show him as much more powerful.
Final thoughts:
Vikram is worth a watch in theatre. Guarantees entertainment for your money.
But, will I call it a "brilliant" movie? No.
Kamal, Fahadh and VJS have acted in even better movies in their career.
So I would never call Vikram the best/ benchmark movie of the 3 actors/ director Lokesh.
Even though this whole cinematic universe concept is not really my type, I can call Vikram a unique effort by Lokesh Kanagaraj.
