READ THE BOOK INSTEAD. This movie is hardly even based off of the book. It lacked all the beauty of the novel which caused the film to just seem like a lot of disturbing abuse. All the beauty in the book that was lost in this film was what took that abuse and turned it into a beautiful story of redemption. This film didn’t do it justice.
SPOILER ALERT if you haven’t read the book—
The whole book was centered around God and His unconditional love and this film seemed to completely lose that as the main message.
Michael’s character was a strong, selfless, loving, patient man being used as a tool by God to rescue Angel from her abusive life and I didn’t feel his character in the movie portrayed that well enough. It didn’t accurately show how extremely hard it was for Angel to accept his love at all and how long it took for her to accept it which also didn’t help to portray how truly patient and strong in the Lord he really was.
The Altman family was a huge part of the book and each of their relationships with them portrayed such a beauty in the book that was completely missed in this film. They were a huge part of Angel’s story of redemption.
I get the issue of time, but this was a let down.
The book was amazing and this did not compare at all. Just read the book! It was a beautiful story.
