While not perfect in messaging or genre, this movie mostly works & is worth watching. There’s some typical, almost flat stereotypical characters, but also a decent representation of diverse & unexpected stand outs. This movie makes a heroic attempt to address a lot of social issues in under 2 hours. There is one major flaw, the reveal of a date rape that was put on the same level as insulting someone’s hair, seriously undermining this issue. However, the messages of friendship, support, feminism, activism & inclusion still come through brightly & the issues are vital discussion topics for parents of teens. Adult/teen & teen/teen relationships were believable, funny & touching. The main character doesn’t always make the best choices, but she perseveres. The other teen actors were wonderful as well, especially her love interest, a charismatically charming young actor who successfully embodies his endearing character. He is exactly the kind of guy you would want your daughter to date. Amy takes a back seat as an actor & a front seat as a director & absolutely shines in both roles. Casting was spot on & despite the serious situations, it’s still a fun, empowering comedy, because life is both stressful & funny.
