McGuire crafts an initially compelling story although this is undermined by poor pacing; the narrative seems appropriately slow in some areas and rushed in others. I imagine this is due to abandoning/altering plotlines at the last moment as several leadups petter out anticlimactically. I found the ending to be particularly unsatisfactory, almost as if the author couldn't care anymore for bringing the story the "intertwined" fates of Stephen Doyle and James O'Connor to a decent conclusion. Although I bought this on a clearances sale, the buyer's remorse still rankles.
