This movie meant so much to me on so many different levels. I’m a combat veteran (OIF). The movie articulated the emotions and the thought process of trying to acclimate to civilian life after war. The scene of Takoda describing the incident in the bar really hit home— I had a similar incident occur three months after I got out of the military. The individuals who accosted me weren’t only focused on the fact that I was a veteran—they were focused on the fact that I was a BLACK VETERAN. Realizing that even after risking your life for a country, you still won’t be treated with basic dignity is a sobering feeling. I joined when I was 17 years old, and deployed for the first time 7 months later at the age of 18. I’m now 34 years old, have two kids of my own and volunteer at the local VA hospital working with a lot of these Vietnam vets and their stories are harrowing. To hear them intimate to me that they still don’t feel appreciated is heartbreaking. As someone who suffers from combat-related PTSD this film is therapeutic. Every veteran needs to see this. The acting/production is great. I can tell this film was handled with extreme respect and that means a lot to me and the rest of our community. 👌🏾👌🏾👌🏾
