I bought this recording recently because I have a collection of film and television dvd's of Graham Kennedy and books featuring him. It's not a massive collection and I don't buy dvd's in which he made only a cameo appearance.
So I didn't buy this because I think Graham is a great singer. On his singing voice he sounds much likes he talks, you could say Peter Noone from Herman's Hermits did similar.
There is nothing about the recording of this record in the book KING by Graeme Blundell because I think it would be an interesting story, especially if my assumptions are correct and these are my assumptions.
It's not a very good record.
I think Graham wanted to record a selection of show songs (of course) but due to copyright or purchasing rights he had to accept the lesser songs from the musicals he chose. and the perfect example is Do I Hear A Waltz , Embassy Waltz from My Fair Lady. Really he should have only sang With a Little Bit of Luck or Get Me to the Church on Time, which would have bee suitable for his voice.
From Cabaret he should have sung Cabaret but he sings a number called If I Could See Her Now, an ok song but not for his voice.
The one song I'm familiar with is Herod's Song from Jesus Christ Superstar and although he does a good job of it it still seems misplaced or more so an odd song.
Once again,I would imagine that he went in to this project with a list of songs which I believe were whittled away.
This could have been a much more enjoyable album if it opened with Comedy Tonight from A Funny Thing Happened on The Way To The Forum and with songs such as Pass Me By, The Candy Man, the two i mentioned from My Fair Lady, and if he was going to use Bert Newton as he did they could have sung Well, Did You Ever which they may have done on TV. There's also a lesser George M Cohen song
and he would have been good at Yankee Doodle Dandy or Give My Regards to Broadway.
The best two songs are from a forgotten musical called Pippin. They are Corner Of The Sky and No Time at All.
The back sleeve says Graham put a of of money into this recording and my feeling is he was short changed because these are all basically B grade songs.
