I love the paintings of Van Gogh and am familiar with his life story. However the blurred, shakey visuals and jarring music were so confronting for me that I considered walking out, feeling nausea and starting a headache. Maybe I'm particularly susceptible to this phenomenon. My husband found it challenging but not so upsetting. I understand that the film maker was encouraging the audience to have the visceral reactions to the world that Van Gogh had, in order to better understand his struggles
. However I think this disturbing camera work could have served that purpose while being restricted to a small part of the film. Sadly, I had to miss at least half of the film because I simply, couldn't watch it.
