I enjoy the show in general but the writing is going to have to be better in future episodes if Manifest is going to keep me tuning in week after week. There were two major flaws in the latest episode that need to be addressed and for the most part seemed to be overlooked. I suppose now is a good time for a *SPOILER ALERT* if you have not seen the episode. Ok. Here goes:
Flaw number one- Ben Stone needs more of a backbone with his wife. She basically steamrolls him and he’s cool with it. After Cal sneaks out of the house to help his dad to look for the passengers who are being experimented on, Ben safely returns him home. However, he gets chastised by Grace for not getting him out of harms way sooner. It wasn’t his fault! When he tries to argue his point, she shuts him down by describing how she “mourned” Cal for five long years. Ok, fair enough.......but what about Ben? She didn’t mourn him? And why didn’t he pick up on that omission and and mention it to her? Way to make him feel loved! Why is he still fighting for her anyway, when she clearly loves that other guy (Danny)? If it’s over, accept it and move on.
Flaw number 2- Jared gets blown up in the tunnel and is fighting for his life. Michaela Stone...in the hospital room...waiting by his side for him to wake up. Where the hell is Lourdes? You know, his wife? Did no one call her? If not, why? If so, then where is she? Why isn’t she planted in a seat in that hospital room waiting for her husband to wake up. When he finally does wake up, Michaela makes some lame reference to Lourdes being “on the way.” Where is she coming from, the waiting room? He’s been in that bed for some time, plenty of time for her to arrive. No one brings up his wife being absent as an issue. There’s some holes that need plugging for this ship to stay afloat. The writing needs to be crisper and the characters sharper for it to work. It’s an intriguing concept, but will it last? I don’t know. Ben and Lourdes both need to do a better job of speaking their minds.
