Dune reminds me of a pretty present at Christmas time but inside is a mediocre gift. Here the scene is set during the 2 hour and 35 minute movie - a chosen one, a villain race, and planet of people thinking the chosen one is unworthy . This movie trope is so overplayed in Hollywood that the movie seems lackluster at face value of plot .
The main villain is just that - a villain that shows nothing more Than being a static villain . The tech is impressive but over all all the action sequences end up being hand to hand swordplay “why no future weapons “ don’t know … this is a sword slashing movie set in the future without light sabers … but we kinda do have Jedi - but only choose to use their power when the film seems it necessary . Now I’m told this is going by the original book so my criticisms in the plot is that it’s pretty bland book idea - but I haven’t read it so something about all this addressing crucial stupid plot info could be fixed there.
The film is bland and a boring spectacle . When there’s a point of intensity it gets washed away with instant help from friends and than off to the other part of the movie real quick because these characters choose to sacrifice their lives for these people and … well don’t think about it too much because they don’t explain enough even with the long run time you lose so much character development to try to establish a world that isn’t that hard to understand. I can fit all information about this world in one page … that won’t take 45 minutes of explaining to get through.
They try to make this seem to the mild movie watcher that this is some kind of profound movie going experience which is far beyond mediocre that it becomes super mundane and predictable.
Gotta love the pointless ending that puts our hero in the mix of fighting one vs one against some random person … woah excitement speed forth with all the drama of a boring over played hack sword movements we’ve seen done 900 other times in this film. At least creative film makers can take something that has been supremely over done in their own film and make it interesting in some kind of scale . Here it’s a snooze fest.
I judge this harshly because this director has done some amazing films with slow gritty build ups and amazing performance from his talent and keen eye for detail. Except the entire ending of arrival but I’m not getting into the stupid super alien abilities…
The ending of this film seems dumb because here’s a character whom builds up his super power that he has from his mother who is also there but he ends up trading swords at the end when he could have just used his command power to fix all his problems … maybe the book explained why he couldn’t do this and mommy couldn’t either but here it just seems forgotten about .
That is a good way of explaining this movie . Forget about things until it’s gonna be needed and than forget about it again so we can have more pointless drama that falls flat from ever being exciting or interesting.
