Starts off with some promise, but quickly becomes frustrating and mundane. Many of the missions success is based far more on luck than skill, like a mission where you're going through a sandstorm and have a very limited time to find oil tankers, which you must find just by wandering over them, since they only appear for a few seconds and disappear for far longer, while you're blind from the sandstorm. Like this mission, many of the earlier missions are meant to be punishment (unenjoyable), and the game-play definitely reflects that.
Overall, it brings nothing new to the table compared to the other Ace Combat games, but has some redeeming moments. As someone who loves this franchise, even the cheesy stories and characters that are all very similar from game to game, I was sorely disappointed. This game has careless cash grab written all over it, especially when you consider how the VR is motionless as if you just have the TV screen on your face, and the very outdated graphics that are a downgrade from AC6 (which came out in 2007), not to mention how faulty the online play is. I suspect that many of the Google reviews are planted, judging by the exact repetition of falsehoods and vague enthusiastic support. I highly recommend you rent before buying, or just avoid all together.
