I would say, like, 7,5/10? So I must say, it was a really good film, although the animation was not the best. But since it was, what, 37 years ago, I’d cut it some slack. Also the plot was pretty solid, and I nearly cried when Seita said “[Setsuko] never woke up again”. It was a really devastating film, but, (don’t come at me!), “Grave of the fireflies” was not my cup of tea, and I won’t watch it again. Now for my little rant. I did NOT like the aunt. Yes, maybe she isn’t the arse people say she is, but she still mistreated the children, even telling Setsuko about her mother’s demise out of spite. However, I don’t think Seita should have run away. Because of his pride, he had doomed himself and his young, innocent sister. If only he had tried to be more polite and helpful, like doing some housework, Setsuko could have survived longer and maybe he could even develop a good relationship with aunt’s family. (We DEFINITELY see that the girl has a crush on him, and technically she isn’t related to him by blood). All of the suffering could have been prevented, if only Seita had swallowed in his pride (I saw some others make this point as well). Thanks for letting me share it with you! If you don’t agree, feel free to scroll my rant, the review at the top is mostly my take on it. I would recommend watching it, but maybe not for light-hearted people, unless you have a few boxes of tissue handy.
