This is a surprisingly uplifting film. I say surprisingly because the life of that poor girl, Belmaya, is staggeringly violent with very few options. And yet she is the definition of resilient and optimistic. It's also an impressive partnership between Belmaya and the British filmmaker, who in the Q&A afterwards demonstrated her sensitivity and thoughtfulness and care for Belmaya. Altogether, it's an impressive accomplishment.
