Ugh. I loved the first book so much that I bought this sequel, hoping that the second book would be as good as the first.
Sadly, no. I find it dull. The plot just does not move forward in a satisfying way. It drags on and on with lots of plot repetition (new location…same plot as last scene!).
The new “aliens” just don’t work as a character in the book. I won’t spoil it, but the non traditional approach to aliens just does not work. Instead of being engaging, interesting or intimidating, the new aliens are predictable, annoying, silly and unimpressive.
Even worse, the big surprise that is so painfully teased over hundreds of pages is obvious from the start. The book has no payoff for the reader.
Lastly, the protagonists find themselves in peril mostly as a result of their own incompetence. I’d much rather have a clever and menacing threat drive the plot instead of clumsy bumbling “heroes”. With dumb heroes, the reader has no one to root for.
It is a disappointment. I won’t be purchasing any further novels in this series or from this author.
