I donโt get why people love The Book Thief. I went in expecting something great, but what I got was a slow, boring mess that drags on forever.
First off, the narration. Death is the storyteller, and that sounds cool at first, but it gets old fast. Instead of adding anything interesting, it just makes the book feel weirdly detached. Death throws in random comments that donโt really add much, and half the time, it spoils whatโs going to happen anyway, so thereโs no suspense.
Then thereโs Liesel. Sheโs called โThe Book Thief,โ but she barely steals any books, and honestly, her story just isnโt that engaging. The characters around her, like Rudy and her foster parents, are fine, but the book drags their interactions out so much that itโs hard to care. Every conversation, every little moment, is stretched to its breaking point.
The writing is another issue. Zusak tries way too hard to be poetic, breaking up sentences weirdly and throwing in metaphors that donโt really work. Instead of making the story feel deep, it just slows everything down even more.
And the pacingโbrutal. This book is way longer than it needs to be. Scenes that should take a couple of pages go on forever, and by the time something actually happens, I was already too checked out to care.
By the end, I wasnโt sad, moved, or impressedโI was just glad to be done. If you like slow, overly wordy books where not much happens, maybe youโll enjoy this.
