Well taken movie . Kudos to the editing .Though maniratnam and the screenplay writers have taken liberties to deviate from the original novel, it is so slick that the younger generation which may not have read the original weekly periodically series, may even believe that this film is true history. The settings and costume are magnificent .The romance expression scene between Vandiyathevan and Kundavai is very sophisticated, decent and still very romantic.
OomaiRani character needed to have been emphasized more, considering the irony of her personal story in which she goes to great lengths to save her first lover's ( chola king's ) son and her own daughter (thru the pandya king) ends up revenging her first love. Some jarring questions remain : How did Madhuranthakan quietly switches side without being killed by the Rashtrakuta enemies and how Oomai Rani arrives at her lover's palace right in time to save him and how she seems to have been ignorant all the while of her daughter being the queen of Pazhuvettarayar.
Jayaram definitely deserves best supporting actor of the year award !
