I have to declare I am someone who has enjoyed much of both Scott and Pheonix's cinematic output. So I find it hard to award them 1 Star. To be fair, I'd have given them none if it was possible such is the dismalness of this affair. It's not like there wasn't enough warning from the vast majority of reviews.
Firstly, this film seems to have no idea of what it is meant to be. If it was meant to be an insight in to the relationship between Napoleon and his wife then that is what is should have been. If it was meant to be a sweeping biopic of Napolean then this isn't it. So what is it meant to be? Absolutley no idea, but the first 60 minutes is pure tedium.
Much has been made of the terrible hstorical inaccuracies. Scott's answer to critics on this is 'get a life'. Well that's ok if, to quote form Scott's historically iffy Gladiator, you can affirmatively answer the 'Are you entertained?' question. The answer in this household is absolutely yes to Gladiator and absolutely not to Napolean.
The reconstructions of Austerlitz and Waterloo have correctly been widely panned. So nothing to add there. Two more to consider, why is there no proper mention of Trafalgar 1805 one of the most significant and improtant Naval Battles of all time that ended Napolean's ambition to invade England forever? Secondly, and a minor point, it was Marshall Ney who was sent to arrest Napoleon on his return from Elba Excile in 1815, not whoever they said in the film. It is widely understood that the raptuous welcome Ney's troop gave to Napolean was far more euphoric than shown in the film!
So in summary, this film is made up nonsense that Pheonix mubbles incoherently through, and is about as entertaining as an additional Tax demand. Don't waste any of your hard earned on watching this.
