I really loved this film. I haven't read the book so I entered the theatre with no pre-conceptions. From reading other reviews I gather that the ending has been changed. That didn't worry me. I think it's more realistic, considering the times, that this isn't a happy ending. However, it's not tragic, more bitterweet. I loved the atmoshere of oppression Jankel creates. However, juxtaposed against the glorious Scottish countryside it allows us to breathe a bit. I felt all the the performances were strong and believable but particularly loved Gregor Selkirk's energy as young Chalie. I think we'll be seeing much more of him. I think this is an important film that tells a beautiful story of the price of love. There are some very moving scenes of violence which remind us that women, certainly in the 50s, didn't own their own bodies. This is a must see.
