Foundation of the story is good. Settlers trying to find a better life in a new land but run into all the challenges in that time period. Indians want to preserve their land and will fight to do it.
But I agree with many reviewers that the movie is 3 hours but horrible at character development. Then the last 90 seconds of the movie is a fast-moving montage that you can't keep up with that seems to accelerate over months and years using visual snippets of the discombobulated story. I heard one guy say as we were leaving the theater, "I guess they ran out of time so had to rush through a bunch of things, otherwise the moview would have been 6 hours."
Final analysis is this, even without seeing however many parts come after. This should never have been a movie in a theater. It should have been a series on a streaming service like Netflix that tells the stories over a series of episodes during an entire season (or multiple seasons). It should have been as good as 1883 or Yellowstone. Unfortunately, it is not.
