I only recently discovered Dexter. I saw an interview with Uma Thurman on a late night show where they said she was going to be on the new season of Dexter. As a huge Kill Bill fan, I knew I had to watch every season so that I could catch up to the present day and be ready for the release of Resurrection. Fast forward to now and I am a huge Dexter fan!
The original series had a playful vibe and I thought it was excellent. But there things I didn't enjoy about it. First of all, Dexter is always being nagged at by various women, and that kills the fun. Secondly, I thought it was unnecessary to make him a father. I don't understand why they had to take things in that direction. Why does he always have to be strapped down with responsibilities?
I love every single scene with Michael C. Hall on the screen, but now when I rewatch the show, I find myself skipping almost every non-Dexter scene. For me, most of the subplots are just unnecessary filler. There were some characters who stole my heart, like Angel, Masuka, and Lumen. But other than that, I really don't care about any of them. And that brings me around to Harrison...
My favorite seasons of the OG show were 2 & 5, but I liked the whole tone of New Blood more than any of the original seasons, which is surprising since Harrison was such a huge part of New Blood. Let me just level, I really don't like Harrison. I think the actor who plays him is very talented, so it's nothing personal. It's just that after almost 20 years of Dexter as a character, I think it's time that he's set free from responsibility, guilt, etc. It's time for him to explore the world, unshackled from his past. This includes Harrison. And with the way New Blood ended, I don't think it's any guess as to why I have no loyalty to the Harrison character.
Resurrection just came out, and at the time of writing, there are only 3 episodes released. Nevertheless, it is already my favorite season of the entire show. We are currently seeing Dexter considering letting go of his past, and starting with a clean slate. I really hope this is the direction the show takes in the future. I believe the writers can find a way to balance the Dexter we all know and love, the one who DOES care about his son, with a new Dexter who embraces the full scope of who he truly is. He should set out into a new chapter of life, unburdened and ready to deal with more risque themes and have some carefree fun so that he can further know himself.
It's my firm belief that Dexter should never get caught and go to prison, and he should never die. We as an audience can see more clearly than ever that the purpose he serves in this fictional universe is a wholly necessary one, and there will always be the need for someone who is doing his work. "Dexter in the Dark" (book 3) explores the theme that the Dark Passenger is simply the origin of "darkness" itself, and it is also a necessary force. Dexter is the perfect character to portray a balance between this dark force, and an antihero who the audience loves to root for.
In closing, I will add that I do not like "Original Sin" even though I make sure to speedwatch it, just so I can keep up with the lore. It's pretty inconvenient for me. Again, the actor who plays younger Dexter is very talented, but I do not want to see anyone besides Michael C. Hall playing this character.
