This movie will change your life. If you’re reading this review then you’ve at least taken the first step to considering watching the movie and that’s the hardest step. From the second you load it up, hit play and see Stallone come to grips with losing a grip, you’ll realize he won’t EVER lose a grip again. EVER. Which is admirable considering the traumatic loss of a work associate’s romantic partner in the opening scene. He’s also so strong and focused in so many dangerous difficult situations with limited weather appropriate alpine attire. For the climbing community and the broader outdoor community as a whole, this is a gentle, yet real reminder of the perils of mountaineering. Always check your gear. Always know your partners skill level. And always check your grip. I never considered the possibility of encountering a rancorous mischievous violent gang of thieves while performing alpine rescue and after watching this 90s classic it brings that consideration to the forefront of my concerns when in the mountains. I gave four stars instead of five because I wish there would have been more acknowledgement of the challenges of prolonged mountain survival such as food supply issues. Fortunately the gang of thieves were incredibly well prepared for alpine weather with heavy down jackets even though they were only anticipating being in an airplane for the money heist because this allowed them to endlessly pursue Stallone and company through multiple ascents of 13k foot plus peaks, much to their ultimate demise. They, along with Stallones alpine rescue team, subsisted on nothing but grit and will for days at high altitude through this incredibly entertaining action flick. I walked away from this realizing money leads to greed. Hold on to the ones you love and don’t lose sight of what’s important.
