I walked into the 2020 live-action remake of Mulan with moderate expectations, hoping that it would bring a fresh perspective to the beloved classic. Unfortunately, the film failed to deliver on nearly every level.
The storyline, which deviated significantly from the original, felt disjointed and lacking in coherence. The pacing was slow, with long stretches of boring exposition that failed to advance the plot.
The characters, too, were poorly developed and lacked the depth and nuance of their animated counterparts. Mulan, in particular, felt more like a generic "strong female protagonist" archetype than a fully fleshed-out person.
The acting, while not atrocious, was hardly impressive. The cast struggled to bring any real emotion or chemistry to their roles, making it difficult to become invested in their stories.
Visually, the film was a mixed bag. While the action sequences were occasionally impressive, the CGI was often overused and poorly integrated into the live-action elements.
Overall, I would not recommend the 2020 live-action remake of Mulan to fans of the original or anyone looking for a compelling and engaging film. With its dull storyline, poorly developed characters, and lackluster acting, it's a disappointing and uninspired effort.
