I wish this series would focus more on character development, the backgrounds of the characters, and a more cohesive plot. The series is pretentiously labeled a "comedy-drama". It's just as much of a "comedy-drama" as the T.V. show, Full House, is a "comedy drama".
It's low brow tongue-in-cheek comedy veiled in "quirkiness". The storyline is quirky, the characters are quirky, the character development is quirky. There's comes a point where the viewer is left wanting a more honest portrayal of the theme and characters. Instead, the viewer is left trying pick up the pieces in order to make sense of a quirky movie.
I'm not sure what to make of this show. Is there a hidden reality underneath all of the quirkiness? Perhaps this series should have focused on that angle more closely. The sad trombone musical interlude between different scenes would have one think that that nothing should be taken seriously throughout the show yet it makes a mockery of its own self.
I don't see how there could be a progressive church group in Manhattan, Kansas featuring several LGBT grown adults in such a vocal church setting. This sounds out of touch with reality and it relies on the viewer to bend truth to fit the plot and storyline.
