I got this back in the 90's while I was at school. At the time people were all giddy balls about polygons, everything looked like a it had been sculpted by a poor soul afflicted with parkinsons out of a block of cheese. Early polygons were ugly square messes. The PlayStation had its warped headache 3d and the N64 had a more solid but slower look. Back then, i too was awed by Goldeneye, it still didn't hold a candle to doom 64. I was a moody teen, sat in the dark, ogling posters of the girls of the day, wanting a escape from the droll of school, bullies, spots and glasses. I kept up on N64 releases in my collection of magazines and doom 64 was on my hit list, so when I'd delivered enough papers, sorted out all the gardens I could, I yomped up to hmv for opening at 09.00am to get my sweaty teenage paws on this gem. I ran home and carefully opened my box fought to get that highly static plastic off my hands and like a virgin, I eased it in to my N64. Now I had played doom at my dad's work on the the guy in the stores PC so I wasn't new to doom I had been waiting like a hungry dog. Nothing prepared me for doom 64. It was like I'd been catfished but instead of it being a overweight middle-aged woman in leggings it was like Bianca Beachamps perfect rear. Better than I hoped or thought possible. It's not as fast paced at first, it's spooky, the coloured lighting and levels changing as you play were all a massive step up from doom. Now, doom can make you jump, if you're a new to it. Most of the time you jump, you die, you start again. Doom 64 dropped the rock soundtrack, dropped the level designs and thought to itself, I'm going to hide in the dark, stalk you, then kill you. I remember looking at a room as it transformed in neon blue lights, thinking ohh that's pretty, then a load of imps came out of nowhere. I panicked, died, laughed and started again. The atmosphere will pull you in the swallow you in fireballs and flapping. Beckoning you to steady your nerves while spooky track of clanking metal and machine hums all lull you in to a false sense of security. It so much fun, if you have played it before it might seem silly but if you have never had the pleasure, please, do yourself a favour and have a go. I hear night dive are doing the remaster, those guys rock. I own turok1,2 and forsaken on Xbox one. This little baby is going on my switch for those dead periods at work, earphones in, eyes down, and a tight anus. Let's the ripping begin!
